What Activities will I Participate in While in Rehab?
Recovery work is different from any other self-help activities you’ve participated in before. It’s exciting and intense, energizing and exhausting. At 12 Keys, we understand that taking frequent breaks from the intense therapeutic work we do is not just a nicety, it’s an essential. Explore the activities at 12 Keys Rehab and find out how we can help you or your loved one reengage with fun and sobriety at the same time.
Are there Fun Activities in Rehab?
Rehab is more than just talk. Counseling sessions, therapy sessions and 12 step meetings can be tiring. That’s why 12 Keys includes plenty of time in your daily schedule to renew your body, mind and soul with fresh air, excellent food and fun activities.
Many addicts give up things they once loved to do. It’s not uncommon to put aside things that gave you pleasure, often losing sight of hobbies and other enjoyable activities. Learning once again that it’s okay to laugh, relax and enjoy yourself without drugs is just as important as talking to a counselor during your sessions.
12 Keys’ stunning Florida location makes it an ideal spot for outdoor activities. Residents can enjoy a swim in the outdoor pool, time on the beach or fellowship on the deck overlooking the ocean. Horseback riding, kayaking and fishing are all part of the wholesome outdoor activities offered to our guests. There are also acres of beautiful gardens to enjoy.
To heal your body, we encourage you to spend time in the gym, where a personal trainer can help you learn new routines to regain your fitness and rebuild your strength. Yoga, meditation and other activities round out the ways in which clients take part in their own health and healing.
Our Activities Encourage a Pleasant Experience
Life in rehab should not be an unpleasant experience. Instead, it should be the time for you or your loved one to learn the tools and skills necessary for living a sober life. Our counselors and specialists are uniquely qualified to understand the fears and feelings of our clients because they are all recovering alcoholics and addicts themselves. They understand that a key component to living a real recovery means learning to enjoy once-loved activities. That is why the 12 Keys real recovery program features fun activities available to each and every client.
Spend the day offshore trying for a giant trophy fish or relax with your thoughts by our large on-property pool. Work on your golf game at one of Florida’s incredible 18-hole courses or laugh with new friends over bowling. Learn to horseback ride, surf and snorkel, or practice yoga for an unmatched and deep, life-affirming relaxation.
The 12 Keys recovery experience also includes opportunities to kayak and play softball, read and reflect, and try new activities such as going for an airboat ride. Whichever you choose, your recovery experience will permit ample time to reflect and reengage with the pleasures of a fun — and sober — lifestyle.
We Provide a Diverse Array of Activities Suitable for Every Taste
At 12 Keys Rehab, we focus on healing the whole person — the mind, body and spirit — through holistic treatment programs and activities. As one of our clients, you’ll be provided with your choice of a wide range of fun activities during rehab. Our clients find these indoor and outdoor activities help them relax, de-stress and become re-acquainted with themselves as vital, dynamic and meaningful individuals. You will also gain insight into successfully interacting with others without relying on drugs or alcohol.
All clients at 12 Keys Rehab have the ability to take advantage of one or more exhilarating activities while in drug and alcohol rehab:
Horseback Riding — Animals have amazing healing power. We include as one of our weekend activities horseback riding trips on the beach, that allow you to go on a relaxing and invigorating horseback ride. This is not only beneficial for exercising your muscles, but it will also help you clear your mind as you explore our breathtaking property.
Kayaking — Water has a natural calming effect, and kayaking during rehab is the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy nature and calm your mind. It’s also a fun way to improve your health by strengthening coordination and improving your ability to focus on the moment.
Paddle Boarding — Originating in Hawaii as a cross between surfing and canoeing, paddle boarding is performed either standing up or kneeling on a paddleboard, using an oar to propel yourself across the water. It’s great exercise, exciting to master and helps clients in rehab develop their concentration and motivation skills.
Deep Sea Fishing — Deep sea fishing during rehab is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable activities we offer 12 Keys Rehab clients. Not knowing what you will reel in out of the vast ocean makes it even more exciting to clients who find a day on the water invigorating yet calming.
Bowling — If you’re feeling competitive or stressed, knock these feelings out with a friendly game of bowling. We arrange trips to local bowling alleys, which will help you spend some time outside our recovery center and learn how fun sobriety can be.
Walking and Relaxing in the Garden — One of the best ways to relax your mind, body and soul is through nature. At 12 Keys Rehab, we have walking paths and breathtakingly beautiful gardens for you to enjoy and find your inner peace. Whether you prefer strolling along a waterfront walking path while star gazing or curling up with a good book in the garden, you’ll find the perfect opportunity to reflect on yourself and your goals.
Swimming Pool — We have a large, on-property swimming pool where clients can hone their swimming skills or relax while sunning on an air mattress. Swimming and water aerobics are wonderfully stress-relieving activities that also provide numerous health benefits, from improving muscle tone and joint flexibility to enhancing heart health and elevating your mood.
Movie Theater — Whether you enjoy comedies, dramas or action, going to the movie theater is the perfect way to relax. It’s also a perfect opportunity for you to enjoy sobriety outside our rehab center, while getting the support you need to face challenges you may encounter in these types of settings.
Delicious Meals — One of the best ways to heal your mind, body and soul is with a heathy, delicious meal. We have a talented chef who will prepare nutritious and gourmet meals for you to enjoy in our comfortable dining room or outside patio. Mealtime is the ideal time for you to relax, get to know other people and reflect on your day.
Recovering from a substance or behavioral addiction requires a complete healing of the body, mind and spirit. Incorporating a variety of activities in drug and alcohol rehab programs helps clients learn skills essential to their recovery, such as self-control, goal-oriented thinking and developing positive, healthy habits.
Learning how to master indoor and outdoor activities also provides the kind of satisfaction, enjoyment and sense of self-sufficiency our recovering clients need to realize how important and natural it is to treat yourself with the respect, dignity and compassion you deserve.
Real Recovery, Real Activities, Real-World Access
Unlike other rehab facilities the 12 Keys Rehab staff understands that most people cannot simply walk away from their lives. That is why our clients enjoy access to cell phones and laptop computers. They can communicate easily with business partners and family members. And they can learn to reengage with the people, work and activities they once enjoyed under the careful tutelage of our compassionate, empathetic counselors and specialists.
Do I Have Time to Relax and Reflect?
The counselors and specialists at 12 Keys Rehab know that our recovering family members need time to rest their minds and spirits from the difficult psychological work that healing from substance abuse entails. Our broad array of activities helps our clients rest their minds and spirits while activating their physical selves.
Our unique location in subtropical Florida makes us unlike any other substance abuse treatment facility in the country. The 12 Keys property, situated on 10 lush and private waterfront acres, features beautiful gardens and walking paths, a large swimming pool and a dock perfect for watching the sunset and fishing. Relax on our decks and porches, read and reconnect with loved ones, or eat a meal from our gourmet kitchen. At 12 Keys, the choice is yours.
What Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Activities Will I Participate in?
During your stay at 12 Keys, you’ll participate in both group and individual counseling sessions, as well as 12 step meetings. Here’s what to expect from each:
- Group counseling sessions: Group sessions include several participants and a therapist who facilitates the discussion. The group may meet to work on issues related to anger, abandonment, sexuality or other topics. Sharing is encouraged. What’s said in group meetings is kept private by the participants. Some groups may include activities to help you recognize problems or build trust and other emotional skills you may need to work on in recovery.
- Individual counseling: Private, one-on-one therapy sessions are a key part of your recovery plan at 12 Keys. You’ll meet privately with your assigned counselor to discuss your addiction and anything else you might like to talk about. You may work out traumatic issues using eye movement desensitivization, a technique that repatterns your thoughts with simple eye movements. You may also benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps you retrain your thinking process to avoid situations and thoughts that lead to addictive behaviors.
- 12 step meetings: 12 step meetings follow the same protocols no matter where you attend them. During a 12 step meeting at 12 Keys, a leader announces the meeting and welcomes everyone. The Serenity Prayer is recited, then the 12 steps and 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (or Narcotics Anonymous) are read. Meetings with assigned speakers will then introduce the speaker, who shares his or her story with the group. After the speaker, the floor is opened for personal shares. Each person gets a set amount of time to share, and equal time is granted to each person to speak. Some meetings include time to put your name on a sponsor sheet — either to ask for a sponsor or say you will sponsor someone else — or a “phone sheet”, which simply means you are willing to talk to anyone when they want a fellow addict to talk to as part of their program work. At the end of the meeting, there may be time for fellowship and relaxation among members.
