Intensive Outpatient Program In South Florida
Some people living with addiction believe that residential treatment is their only option when it comes to recovery. The reality is there are many different forms of treatment, like our intensive outpatient program in South Florida.
Some addiction treatment is inpatient, meaning that the patient will live at the facility for the duration of their stay. Other addiction treatment can be arranged for those whose lives do not allow them to get away for 30 to 90 days. For these addictions, an outpatient level of care may be more suited to their needs.
12 Keys offers intensive outpatient rehab programs because we understand that each person suffering from substance abuse requires a personalized approach to their recovery and getting the support they need in order to acclimate to a sober life. At the same time, they can come and go as they please. Supportive sober housing can also be arranged for individuals who require additional support and structure while engaged in a South Florida intensive outpatient program.
What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
Our South Florida intensive outpatient rehab program is a level of care in substance abuse treatment that does not require the individual to stay at a facility during their stay. Those who attend our intensive outpatient treatment program attend group and individual therapy sessions a few times during the week but will live at home and continue to meet their family and work obligations.
An intensive outpatient program in South Florida is “a step down” in treatment level care from inpatient or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) treatment. However, there are times when an individual may begin their treatment process at the IOP level.
Who Needs an Intensive Outpatient Rehab Program?
Intensive outpatient rehab programs are well-suited for:
- Students
- Parents/Caregivers
- Those who don’t require 24-hour supervision
- Those who have completed long-term rehab and would like an aftercare program
Those who attend an intensive outpatient treatment program most often participate in group and individual therapy sessions during the day or night. This gives them the flexibility to continue to work or meet any other obligations that they may have.
For instance, if a person has to continue their work, then they can attend an IOP program at night after their work is done. The same goes for a person who has to care for children. They can attend an IOP during the day while their kids are at school and make it home in time to meet their parental obligations.
Studies have suggested that allowing individuals to continue on in their daily routines during substance abuse treatment can cause additional life stressors to occur. Our intensive outpatient program in South Florida allows people to gain added support from family and friends to deal with those stressors as they arise.
If you are unsure if you are better suited for an IOP in South Florida, rather than the inpatient therapy model, contact an addiction specialist to discuss your needs.
It should be noted that patients who are best suited to begin their recovery journey with an intensive outpatient treatment program must be medically stable. This means they should not be experiencing any significant withdrawal symptoms.
The reason for this is two-fold: For one, some substances can have fatal withdrawal symptoms. In these cases, professional medical assistance should be sought out during the detox. Second, when a patient is going through withdrawal, they are more apt to relapse or fall back into using the addictive substance, because either the psychology strain of withdrawal or the physical withdrawal symptoms are too strong to handle without more complete medical supervision.
Individuals who begin treatment at the outpatient level should have a supportive home life. If they are living with an individual who is currently involved in substance abuse or if there exists real strain at home, then a Florida intensive outpatient treatment program may not be the best way to start a treatment program.
Lastly, individuals who attend an intensive outpatient program should be open to considering a stay in residential treatment if their use continues during outpatient treatment. It’s not unusual for a person to start in IOP but realize they cannot stay sober under this level of care, and so he or she opts for a more intensive addiction treatment program.
Therapies Included in Our IOP
When you join an intensive outpatient rehab center and recovery program, you will have access to the following therapies:
- Individual Therapy. Individual therapy is made up of regular one-on-one sessions with a therapist. These sessions enable patients to understand their condition and develop the necessary self-awareness to beat the addiction.
- Group Therapy. The value of group therapy is that it encourages communication between people who are experiencing similar situations. Group therapy also promotes self-awareness and the feeling that they are not going through recovery alone.
- Holistic Therapy. Many outpatient programs recognize that the body and soul also need therapy, as much as if not more than the mind. Holistic and experiential therapies include art and music, meditation, adventure therapy (ropes courses, kayaking), and equine, or horse, therapy.
As part of their treatment, patients are encouraged to attend outside Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings. Attending these meetings helps get them acclimated to the AA community.
What Should I Expect During IOP?
Individual and group therapy sessions that discuss:
- Relapse Prevention
- Managing urges and cravings
- How addiction affects the chemistry of the brain
You can also expect to learn to improve life skills in other areas, as determined by your intensive outpatient program. Examples of life skills in which some patients might need improvement include employment counseling and effective communication. It is important that clients realize an IOP can sometimes make for a very intense environment. Because therapy often involves family members, these encounters can be very emotional.
Still, they are critical to the recovery process, because clients who have the encouragement and support of loved ones typically improve faster. They also tend to have a better chance at enjoying a long-term, successful recovery.
How Soon Can I Enroll, and How Long Will I Stay?
In some cases, a person can enroll in a South Florida intensive outpatient program immediately. The length of time a person is in an intensive outpatient treatment program depends on the treatment he or she is receiving.
Everyone is different and every IOP is designed with that person’s health and welfare in mind. Therefore, it could run shorter or it could run longer than the average time, which is about eight weeks.
