How do I know if this is the Right Treatment Center for me?

Finding the right treatment center can be difficult. You may have just found out your child has been using opiates or heroin. You may have just been arrested for driving under the influence. You may have been hospitalized for alcohol poisoning or complications with methamphetamine and you know it’s time to stop. This realization can be one of the most transformative periods of your life.

It has become increasingly apparent that addiction can affect anyone across all socio-economic and racial backgrounds. From the high school student to the CEO – the suburban mother of 3 to the construction worker, addiction is progressive. Eventually the understanding that drugs and alcohol have taken over your life becomes the guiding force for every action you take. But you’ve never been prepared for substance abuse treatment or how to find the right treatment center. There is help available for you.

Distraught and overwhelmed, you ask yourself “How do I stop?” You reach out to a friend or family member that has experience with the treatment process. You ask your religious advisor or HR representative. Maybe you Google “drug and alcohol rehab” but the overwhelming number of ads, links, and recommendations can seem daunting, confusing, even discouraging. You click on a few links and call a few treatment centers and speak with admissions coordinators. “Thank you for calling. How can I help?” – you hear them say on the other end of the line and you begin to explain your situation. But how do you know if this is the right treatment center for you or your loved one?

This author worked in admissions for a treatment center for nearly two years and personal experience made it abundantly clear that without a doubt the most important thing a family can do is to make the most informed decision possible on where to send their loved one to recover. The decision to enter treatment for an addict is the turning point where they have the opportunity to take charge of their lives, where they are given the opportunity to grow and thrive in a sober community. Although I am an employee of Journey Pure and I ultimately want you to come here, what is most important is that you make the decision that you think is best for your family. As long as you get into treatment and get the help you need, 12 Keys considers this a success regardless of which facility you choose.

One of the first things to understand is that the substance abuse treatment industry is a multi-billion-dollar business. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) estimates that substance abuse treatment costs about 35 billion dollars a year. Substance Abuse Rehabilitation requires licensing, insurance, medical staff, nursing staff, highly educated therapists, accommodating facilities, and several other expensive factors that contribute to high rates and costs of treatment. Healthcare is expensive. But not all treatment centers were created equally. And some do place profits ahead of patient care. This is, sadly, the current state of affairs. However, these providers are in the minority and most treatment professionals that you interact with will be ethical and have much experience with addiction. Always ask questions of the admissions coordinator you are on the phone with. Make sure that you feel comfortable sending your loved one to their facility. Again, the most important part of the process for a family looking for treatment is to do the research and make the most informed decision available. This should lead to the conclusion that dual diagnosis treatment is of a superior caliber to truly help an addict enter recovery. A good treatment center will be able to work with and treat substance abuse and the issues that often come along with it, like anxiety and depression.

Most individuals who struggle with substance abuse have what are called co-occurring issues that contribute to the severity of their addiction. Anxiety, depression, trauma, or even bipolar disorder can complicate the struggles. These issues require a more thorough type of treatment to ensure recovery. Dual Diagnosis is the type of treatment that is designed to treat a client’s problem in entirety, and not just their substance abuse issues. The DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance says “A person who has a dual diagnosis has two separate illnesses, and each illness needs its own treatment plan.”

It is estimated that 4 million people struggle with dual diagnosis issues in America. Dual diagnosis therapy provides this proper care from day 1 of checking in to treatment. If a client does not receive the proper care it is unlikely they will be able to succeed once they discharge from treatment. Sometimes, when an individual struggle with dual diagnosis issues, like anxiety or depression, they can get clean and sober but may have their mood issues flare up a few months into sobriety. This can lead to relapse and more treatment stays. If this has happened to you, look into a dual diagnosis treatment that can treat both substance abuse and mental health issues.

In a dual diagnosis environment, your loved one will get the opportunity to receive medically supervised detox, one on one intensive therapy with a licensed clinician, a combination of different treatment modalities designed to get to the root of addiction and co-occurring issues, and exposure to recovery groups and a sober community. Participation at this level ensures that a client will receive everything they need to enter recovery outside of treatment, and the chances of success are very high when all of these tools and skills are applied. 12 Keys offers several different varieties of dual diagnosis modalities.

And ultimately you want to be able to feel comfortable with sending your loved one to a relatively closed environment where you may have less contact than you are used to. A good facility will accommodate your tour requests and spend much time on the phone with you answering any and all questions that may come up. This is a sensitive time. And one of the best tools that you can employ is using your judgement as to whether or not you feel comfortable and respected while on the phone with admissions. If you feel rushed or pressured in a way that makes you feel more uncomfortable than you already do, it may not be the right facility for you and your family.

12 Keys take great pride in the skilled admissions coordinators that will hold space with you during this difficult time and guide you into the proper care, whether that is with 12 Keys or at a facility that will provide you with what you need. In some cases, your insurance may not cover treatment with 12 Keys or you may require a higher level of medical or psychiatric care. In that event, 12 Keys will not leave you on your own to find the right treatment center to help. The admissions team has a wing that works with other treatment centers, that have been vetted and trusted, and you will be recommended and introduced to admit to their care. You will never refer you to a facility unless it is in your best interest to receive a different level or type of care. This is healthcare and everyone needs all the help they can get. Helping every caller get to the facility that is best for their specific clinical situation and means is the first priority.
