3 Things You Should Bring to Rehab and 3 Things You Shouldn’t

If you’ve decided to enter rehab, your mind is probably flooded with questions, the least of which is, “What should I bring?” Going to rehab is not quite like a vacation, but it’s not prison, either.

When you come to 12 Keys, here are the top three things you should and shouldn’t bring.

Top Three Things to Take to Rehab

What you want to bring to rehab is what will help you be successful in your recovery, and it may not only be physical items. Take a look at these three things you’ll definitely want to bring:

  • Positive attitude – We’re not being cheesy here, and we won’t force you to sit around a campfire singing songs, unless you absolutely want to. But a positive attitude is crucial to your success.

Rehab is stressful, and you’ll be making a lot of progress in a short period of time. A positive attitude will help you work through the issues underlying your addiction.

We do everything we can to ensure your recovery process is both comfortable and effective. Bring your positive attitude the first day, and our compassionate staff of recovered addicts will be there to catch you if your positive attitude starts to grow stale.

  • Toiletries – Bring your own toiletries when you come to rehab. We’ll provide the toilet, sink and shower. However, be sure to bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, hair dryer, makeup and feminine hygiene products.

Perfumes, colognes, aftershave, mouthwash and hair products are all okay as long as they don’t contain alcohol. You will not be able to use any products containing alcohol during your stay with us.

  • Cell phone & laptop computer – These electronic devices have become like appendages to most of us. We get that. For many of us, our phone and laptops keep us connected to family and work. Some facilities don’t allow these devices at all, but 12 Keys is different. After all, this is rehab, not prison.

Although you won’t have access to technology around-the-clock, you’ll have scheduled time to use it throughout your stay. Don’t forget your power cords and chargers, too.

Top Three Things You Shouldn’t Bring to Rehab

Here are the top three things you don’t want to be bringing to rehab:

  • Drugs or alcohol – You might think this is a no-brainer, but we have to say it just to be clear. Plus, some folks may be concerned about their prescription meds. If you’re on medication prescribed by your doctor, bring enough for your entire stay. You may not have access to it yourself after check-in, but you’ll receive your medication as required.
  • Valuable jewelry – With the exception of wedding bands, watches and any other jewelry you wear every day, it’s best to leave valuables at home. That means you want to pass on bringing your grandfather’s gold pocket watch or your grandmother’s pearl necklace.
  • Sharp or potentially dangerous objects – This includes nail clippers, scissors or irons. If you’re worried about growing claws or talons, just bring a wooden emery board to keep things filed down.

If you’re concerned about wrinkled clothes, a damp towel actually works. Press a damp towel over your clothing and smooth out the wrinkles with your hand for an instant rehab-approved iron.
