What to Bring

The best and most important thing to remember is to keep it simple. Also, you’re not being punished— if you forget something, you can get access to it later. This assumes, of course, that whatever you need doesn’t fall on the “what not to bring” list.

Important items to pack include:

  • Modest and comfortable clothing. Plan for a week’s supply of casual, non-revealing tops, bottoms, undergarments, pajamas and outerwear. Please avoid tees with offensive or inflammatory language or images. Short skirts, halter- or tube-style tops, muscle shirts and short shorts should also be avoided. Modest swimwear is also encouraged. Shoes, belts, hats and socks are more must-haves.
  • Prescription medication. 12 Keys Rehab needs to know in advance if you plan to bring prescription medication with you. You may not have access to the medication after check-in, but it will help us understand what’s going on with you physically and emotionally.
  • Cell phone and laptop computer. Although you won’t have access to technology all the time, you will be able to use it as scheduled. Don’t forget charging equipment and power cords.
  • Toiletries. Your toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush, hair dryer, makeup and feminine hygiene products are okay. Mouthwash, hair products, aftershave, and perfumes and colognes are only okay If they do not contain alcohol. Anything with alcohol will be kept under lock and key and only used with staff supervision.
  • Your wallet. Bring identification, proof of insurance coverage, a small amount of cash, and a debit or credit card.
  • Books or other reading materials. Keep in mind that only certain books are allowed and inappropriate material may be confiscated to ensure your focus remains on recovery.

What Not to Bring

In addition to clothing that might provoke other clients, there are certain things you need to keep home.

These include:

  • Alcohol, drugs, weapons or other self-defense objects or chemicals.
  • Sharp or potentially dangerous objects, such as scissors, nail clippers or irons.
  • Valuable jewelry. Unless you wear your jewelry every day — such as a wedding ring or watch — leave valuables at home.
  • Cleaning supplies.
  • Anything that includes alcohol as an ingredient. Hair-care products and mouthwash often contain alcohol.
  • Unapproved prescription medications.
  • Personal recording devices, televisions and other unapproved electronics.

Visitation

Remember, if you forget something, you may have access to it later. If possible, a loved one may be able to bring you something you didn’t think you’d need during visitation — for example, a favorite fishing rod. Also keep in mind that you may not have access to certain items at first, because again you’ll be focusing on your recovery but with improved health you’ll be able to access all permitted items you bring along.
